Painting Around Fundão — Interior, Exterior and Façades
Painting in Central Portugal is not the same as painting in the Netherlands or the UK. Summers hit façades hard, winters are damp enough to grow mould indoors, and almost every old stone house has a moisture issue somewhere that needs sorting out before you can even think about lifting a brush.
We do interior and exterior painting, façade work and masonry painting from our base in Fundão. Not a quick coat over the top, but proper preparation — scraping, degreasing, dealing with humidade and mould, filling where needed, priming, and only then the finish coats with Sikkens-grade products.
What we do
- Interior painting — walls, ceilings, frames, doors and staircases. For interior walls we usually use breathable paint with an anti-mould additive, so humidade does not get trapped under the paint and you avoid the dark patches that come back after a wet winter.
- Exterior painting and façade work — façade painting on stone houses, rendered walls and painted masonry. We mainly work with UV- and weather-resistant systems built to handle the brutal mix of summer heat and winter rain. For visible façades we recommend silicone-based paints: they shed water but still let the wall breathe.
- Damp prep and anti-mould treatment — almost every older home here has humidade somewhere. We track down the source first (often rising damp from the foundation, or a leak you thought had been fixed), treat with fungicide and salt blockers, and only paint when the wall is dry and stable. Skip that step and the problem is back within a year.
- Masonry and exposed stone — sealing, impregnating, or deliberately leaving raw for the rustic look. We discuss up front which effect you actually want and what maintenance comes with it.
Climate prep for Central Portugal
Winters here are wetter than newcomers expect — façades drink water, and any cracks in the render let it run down behind. We check every façade for hairline cracks and loose plaster before we even open a tin of primer. We also do not paint exterior surfaces when wall moisture is above roughly 15% — otherwise the nice new coat lifts off within two winters.
Summer is the other extreme: direct sun on a dark-painted wall easily hits 60 °C surface temperature, and not every paint survives that thermal stress. So no random supermarket tins, but professional systems — Sikkens or equivalent grade.
Service area
From Fundão we cover Covilhã, Castelo Branco, Belmonte, Idanha-a-Nova, Sertã and Sabugal. Registered as a sole trader (trabalhador independente) in Portugal — NIF 309729211.
How it goes
Send through photos of the room or façade by WhatsApp or the form — close-ups of any damp patches or flaking are particularly helpful. We then come round for a survey, give an honest estimate, and schedule the work in a window when the weather is on our side.
